Fostering involves short term placements (usually 2 weeks to 2 years) whilst the local authority works with a child or young person’s birth family to help them return to their parents, identify a long term foster placement for the child or young person or find other suitable accommodation. Some children or young persons are unable to return to their birth families and so are placed permanently with their foster carers. This is known as a long term or stable placement and can last until they are 18. Some long term placements are with siblings, parent and child placements and unaccompanied asylum seekers.
